TechGirls are Coming to America

Three Accomplished Young Women from the Middle East Shadow D.C. PR and Tech Teams to Advance Their Careers

For the second consecutive year, Synoptos and Proof Strategies are joining the U.S.’s global commitment to advance the rights of women and girls and promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education, by hosting three young women from the State Department-sponsored TechGirls exchange program.

Today, 15 year-old Joanna Kawwa from Jordan, 16 year-old Noor Assi from the Palestinian Territories and 17 year-old Azza Krichen from Tunisia will shadow the D.C. staff from Synoptos and Proof Strategies as part of the TechGirls exchange program. The young women will meet with executives and staff from the two companies, participate in hands-on tech demonstrations, and join a company-wide paid media training.

Organized by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by Legacy International, TechGirls is an international summer exchange program designed to empower and inspire girls from the Middle East and North Africa to pursue careers in science and technology. This year 28 teenage girls from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Territories and Tunisia are participating in the TechGirls exchange program from July 8 to August 1, 2018. In addition to Proof Strategies and Synoptos, this year’s TechGirls partners include: AT&T, Echo & Co, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), iStrategy Labs, Islamic Relief, Nokia, NPR, Relief International and TechChange.

“The future of technology will be more global and female-driven, and TechGirls is helping to seed that positive change” said Synoptos President Andrew B. Einhorn. “As a diverse and multidisciplinary global company, Synoptos is proud to be hosting the TechGirls for the fifth year now, part of our commitment to cultivating the next generation of technologists. Each year we look forward to sharing a ‘day in the life’ of a tech-forward company with these young women, and without fail are blown away by their talent, drive and poise.”

“We are thrilled to welcome these three accomplished young women to our offices today,” said Proof Strategies U.S. General Manager, Mimi Carter. “Last years’ experience was so energizing for our entire staff. This year, we’re excited to work with Synoptos again to share some of the technical skills needed in the public relations industry as these bright young women embark on the next phase of their lives and careers.”

The centerpiece of the exchange program is a weeklong technology camp that provides participants with an in-depth examination of technology-related topics and engages them in more than 45 hours of hands-on instruction. The camp is complemented by additional activities: site visits to technology companies, leadership clinics, community service opportunities, job shadowing, like the opportunities at Synoptos and Proof Strategies, and cultural events. As part of program, the TechGirls implement at least one peer training program or service project within their schools and/or communities. Alumnae of the TechGirls exchange program, now totaling 158, have trained more than 3,100 peers in their home countries.
